Planetary Insights

A UX/UI redesign focused on simplifying complex environmental impact metrics through clear visual hierarchy, structured layouts, and intuitive navigation. The project explores how design can make data-driven information more accessible and engaging for users.

Brief

Role

Problem

Planetary Insights is a startup within the Planetary Accounting Network, a not-for-profit helping organisations operate within environmental limits. Their platform, Planetary Facts, lets producers and consumers quantify the environmental impact of products across the supply chain, think nutritional labels, but for the planet.

The brief was to redesign their existing platform through a comprehensive design system; addressing inconsistent UI, poor usability, and unclear communication of complex sustainability data. The goal was a system clean enough to be implemented directly by their developer and scalable enough to support new features as the product grows.

Solo project, UX research, design system, and interface design.

The original platform presented complex environmental impact data in a way that was difficult for users to understand and navigate. Users struggled to interpret the metrics, locate key information, and move between pages due to unclear navigation, weak visual hierarchy, and an overwhelming layout. Important features such as pop-ups and assessment pages were not easily discoverable, which reduced user engagement with the platform.

User Persona

Design System
To ensure visual consistency and usability across the platform, I developed a simple and cohesive design system. The system establishes clear rules for typography, colour usage, spacing, and component structure, allowing complex environmental data to be presented in a structured and accessible way.

A muted colour palette of grey, blue, and orange was used to highlight key environmental metrics while maintaining a professional and minimal interface. Typography focuses on clarity and readability, using a clean sans-serif typeface to create a strong visual hierarchy between headings, data points, and supporting information.

Reusable UI components such as modular cards, icons, and hover interactions were designed to maintain consistency across different pages. This modular approach allows users to quickly scan information while ensuring that the platform remains visually cohesive and easy to navigate.

ProcessThe original interface had significant usability problems — cluttered layouts, poor visual hierarchy, and navigation that felt unintuitive for a younger, environmentally conscious audience. The starting point was clear: almost everything needed to change.

My first design direction explored a more editorial approach, but it introduced its own complexity and didn't feel clean enough for a data-heavy platform. I scrapped it and simplified.

The hardest part of this project was deciding what to prioritise — the platform had a lot of information competing for attention, and every design decision came down to one question: does this help the user understand faster, or does it get in the way?

Solution
The redesigned platform simplifies complex environmental data through clear visual communication and structured layouts. A modular card system organises impact metrics into digestible sections, while interactive elements such as hover states allow users to explore additional information without overwhelming the interface.

Navigation was improved by introducing clear pathways between pages, including “previous” and “next” buttons and a more structured page hierarchy. A minimal, space-inspired visual theme combined with strong contrast helps highlight key data points and reduces visual clutter, allowing users to navigate the platform more intuitively.

Outcome

Figma Prototype Link

Planetary Insights was a live brief facilitated through RMIT. The redesign was presented to the client, and the concept was positively received by both the client and faculty. Implementation is subject to the client's development timeline.
